Do I Need This?

Where can you reduce clutter in your life?

In the first times I went traveling, there was one habit I would do every time I checked out of a hotel. I would put every complimentary item in the room in my luggage. Be it soaps, shampoo, lotions, mouthwash, coffee, tea, etc. I even made sure to put away those items every day so the housekeeping staff would refill them. When the stay was a weeklong, I could accumulate quite a lot.

My reasoning for doing that was those complimentary stuff was already paid for, and I could use them at home. But later I realized that I never used them at all. I ended up having drawers full of hotel toiletries, some of which were beginning to go bad I had to throw them away. What I meant to be savings ended up being waste.

Some clutters in our life sometimes came from our fear of missing out. We took freebies because we felt we’d be at a loss if we didn’t take them, regardless of whether we’d use them or not. We impulsively bought products that were on sale because we thought there might not be another opportunity to get them at rock bottom prices. But if we never came around to use them, those took up space in our home and wasted our money.

So, in my opinion, the place where we can reduce clutter in our life is in our acquisition of stuff. When we see something and we are tempted to own it, we need to ask ourselves, “Do I need this thing now? Will I or somebody in my household use it every day?” before taking or buying anything. If the answer to both questions is, “No,” then we should not take or buy them. We will find that we have more free space at home, and less reduction in our wallet.
