Just Shut Up and Get on the Scale

For the past few months, I’ve been playing hide and seek with the bathroom scale. I knew I was getting heavier. The polo shirt that I recently bought had difficulties wrapping my torso this morning. “I was sure this fit okay when I bought it,” I told myself as I looked into the mirror in disbelief. It was already an extra-large size. I could not face the possibility of graduating into the extra-extra large size league. Oh God, please no.

No more excuse.

From the past weight loss programs I took, I learned of the three sacred items doctors used to check their patients: A scale (preferably one that can also estimate fat ratio), a blood pressure monitor, and a tailor’s measuring tape. This morning I took measurements on all three. This is the result:

If my former dietician read this, there’s a good chance that she would throw a tantrum.

To reach my ideal weight would mean dropping 30 kilograms of weight. (My head suddenly felt dizzy reading this.) But my main goal is not about being skinny, but being healthy.

There is more to health than just ideal weight. Of course, In my situation, losing weight is directly correlated with being healthy. Losing just 4.9 kg or 5% of my current weight would help to reduce blood pressure and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Today, I began to make some changes.

  • In keeping with my plan to do intermitten fasting, I didn’t have breakfast until 10 am, and stopped eating at 6 pm.
  • I put a lot of fiber on my plate
  • I stop taking second helpings
  • I stop having calorie-laden snacks
  • I walk for 3 km

I want to lose around 1 kg every week. Realistically speaking, that is aggressive. However, the main goal that I want to reach is training my body to adapt to a healthy nutritional intake and to stop craving unnecessary food.
